Youth Wrestling Clinic For Beginners

This clinic is catered to kids Preschool-6th grade with no wrestling experience. The purpose of this clinic is to introduce your child to the basics of wrestling in a fun and friendly atmosphere with experienced technicians. Emphasis will be on learning the basic moves of wrestling and how to score points on your opponent. More information and registration form can be found in the "Youth" section of this website.

Pool Party a Success!

Wrestling Parents, Coaches and Wrestlers,

Just want to say thank you to all who attended the wrestling picnic and pool party this evening. We had a great turnout and hopefully everyone had a good time. Unfortunately the pool party got cut a little short due to the possible severe weather forecast, but for the time we were there it was fun.

Thank you to the parents who brought all the delicious food, and a special thank you to JoAnna Holland and Sandy Nath for taking care of the burgers, hot dogs, water and supplies.

We are fortunate to have so many great wrestling families in the organization and it was nice to bring them all together for a night of fun. Hopefully this can be an annual event. As long as the kids are having a good time that's all that matters.

I believe the "cannon ball" contest was won by Austin Nath, with Coach Bouwman and Courtney Hughes tied for second.

Thanks again and have a great rest of the summer.

I too would like to thank all of you who came to the pool party. My children and I had a great time. Taylor would like to thank the people who brought the cookies and cream desert she wants the recipe. Also to all the wrestler and parents thank you for coming and bring the super food.

Thank you also to JoAnn and Sandy for all that you did to make this night a success. I would also like to thank the Booster Club for putting on this great event even with the rain moving in.

Wrestlers sometime take the time to thank your parents and any member of the booster club they do a lot of work to help our program and to make things better for you. Also try to convince more people to come out and try the great sport that we all love. See you in October.

As for the Cannon Ball contest I think that the Russian judge was really hard on Courtney and I for our age I think that his scores should be thrown out and a redo be called. HAHAHA!!!

Again thank you to all that made this night a great time.

MAWA Board Meeting

- Tuesday, August 9th

The August MAWA board meeting will be held Tuesday, 7:00 at H & R Block. We are still looking for a couple of board members and committee members for the next fiscal year. If you have any interest at all please attend the meeting and volunteer where help is needed. All are welcome.

SMSU Wrestling Camp

This camp is for Marshall/Lakeview wrestlers only. August 1st-3rd. Camp forms can be found in the "Camp" section of the website. Due to MAWA paying for half the fee the cost to parents is only $25, as long as your wrestler attends all 3 nights and didn't attend the team camp in Augsburg. Wrestlers attending the Augsburg camp will have used up camp money allotted for them already.

EVERY WRESTLER should attend this camp for these reasons: 1) Very inexpensive $25 2) It is basically in your back yard, no travel 3) Very good technicians from the SMSU staff. 4) Good chance to bond with teammates 5) Support your SMSU wrestlers

Last year we had over 30 wrestlers attend this camp. It would be nice to get close to that 40 mark this year. For $25 you can't go wrong.

Pool Party!

MARSHALL / LAKEVIEW WRESTLING PICNIC AND POOL PARTY - Thursday, August 11th

Thursday, August 11th MAWA will be hosting a picnic and a pool party at Legion Field Park and the Aquatic Center. The picnic will start at 6:30 at Legion Field Park. Hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, drinks, plates, and utensils will be provided MAWA. Parents just need to bring an extra dish to pass. The pool party will start at 8:00. The $200 pool rental fee and the $3 entry fee for all coaches, wrestlers and guests who are serious about joining the wrestling program will be paid by MAWA. The admission fee for everyone else will be $3.

This will be a great opportunity for the kids to get togather again and have some fun before school starts. The kids had a blast last year and requested we have this event again this year. There may also be a "Cannon Ball" contest off the high dive. Contestants already entering are Coach Bouwman, Coach Hoppe, Austin Nath and Gary Erbes with many yet to enter.

Ten Marshall-Lakeview Youth Wrestlers Place at State

Marshall-Lakeview sent eight youth wrestlers to the Northland Youth Wrestling Association State Individual Tournament at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester this past weekend and had five wrestlers place in the top six of the respective age and weight class. Haley Bahr finished 2nd in Kindergarten 75lb weight class, Kesmond Willert - 3rd in 5th-6th grade 93lb weight class, Zack Felcyn - 4th in 3rd-4th grade 105lb weight class, Cole Felcyn - 5th in 1st-2nd grade 90lb weight class and Jaiden Bahr - 6th in 3th-4th grade 90lb weight class. Also wrestling in the state tournament but not placing were Dylan Louwagie, Spencer Wambeke and Toby Semler.

The Tigers sent seven wrestlers to the NYWA State Invitational Tournament also in Rochester with six of those wrestlers placing in the top four of there respective age and weight class. Placing were Grant Louwagie - 2nd in 1st - 2nd grade 65lb weight class, Ayden St. Pierre - 3rd in Kindergarten 55lb weight class, Brett Regnier - 3rd in 1st-2nd grade 54lb weight class, Noah Jensen - 3rd in 3rd - 4th grade 60lb weight class, and Nick Erbes - 3rd in 7th-8th grade 100lb weight class. Also wrestling in the state invitational but not placing were Dylan Dulas and Jared Reinsma.

The Marshall-Lakeview youth team also participated in the NYWA state dual tournament finishing 1-4 on the weekend. The Tigers team started the weekend off against state runner-up Annandale/Maple Lake losing 58-18, then losing to Deer River 46-39 before finally getting win over Brainerd/Pillager 37-33 to put Marshall-Lakeview in the 7th place pool. Marshall-Lakeview then lost to Litchfield 44-27 and also to local rival TMB/WWG 48-21. Leading the way for the Tigers was Kesmond Willert going 5-0 with 4 pins, Toby Semler 4-1 with 4 pins, Dylan Louwagie 3-2 with 3 pins, and Wyatt Martin 3-2 with 2 pins.

Marshall/Lakeview Youth Tournament a Success!

Thank You!

Just want to say thank you to all who helped to make the tournament a huge success. As you probably noticed it was pretty much standing room only in the bleachers. We had 301 wrestlers participate today from as far west as Pierre, SD to as far east as the cities. It takes a lot of work from many people to put an event such as this on and it went well. There isn't a tournament out there that goes without a little glitch but for the most part ours ran very smooth and people were in and out in a timely fashion. Derek Varpness Qualifies for State!

CONGRATULATIONS to senior Derek Varpness for qualifying for the Minnesota High School State Wrestling Tournament this coming weekend 3/4 and 3/5. Derek qualified for the state tournament by placing 2nd at the 3AA section tournament Saturday 2/26 in the 135 lb. weight class and will be entering the state tournament with a 29-10 record. Good Luck Derek!!!!!!!

Due to the lack of a quorum (6 or more voting members) the December meeting has been canceled. Our next meeting will be on January 9 at 5:00 pm in the 2nd floor meeting room at HyVee. Anything that needs to be voted on between now and then will be decided by an email vote.

NEW! MAWA Board Meeting

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to the members that were able to show up last night. We had a good discussion on various topics and the meeting lasted about 1.5 hours. However we had only three voting members present and would like to set up another meeting as we have quite a few issues that either need to be resolved soon or need to be started in motion very soon. Please respond if you can or can’t make it to a meeting this Sunday, August 15^th at 6:30pm in Founders Hall at SMSU. We will stay on task with our agenda and hopefully be out of there in a timely manner.

Please find the Agenda for the Board meeting on Monday, August 9^th at 6pm in the "Board" section of this website. We will hold the meeting in the Founders Hall Conference Room on the SMSU campus. Founders Hall is the administrative building on the southeast side of campus and the conference room is on the third floor. My cell number is 507-829-5914 if you have any trouble finding it.

Attention MAWA Members

Wrestling Parents,

Wrestling season at all levels is in full swing and soon the Marshall Area Wrestling Association will be hosting it's youth wrestling tournament on February 28. Work assignments for the 2010 AAU District Championships held in Marshall, Jan. 10th, can be accessed in the Youth or Varsity/JV sections of this website.

As you all know these youth tournaments are the wrestling clubs biggest fundraisers. We have a reputation in Marshall of holding the best run, and most competitive tournaments in the area. But that is only possible with the help of parents and coaches.

I have plenty of help scheduled for each work station so no one should be overworked. If you are new to the club and are not sure what you need to do, contact the chairperson at that station and he/she will fill you in. Our next home youth wrestling tournament is the Marshall Junior Open and that is scheduled for Feb. 28th at the RA Facility at SMSU. If you are not on the AAU tournament work schedule you will be listed on the Marshall Junior Open schedule which will be coming out in mid Feb. I will try to spread the work duties out as much as possible especially for the newcomers to the club.

As for all tournaments a lot of work goes into setup and tear down. We will need as many people to be at the Middle School at 8:00 Sunday morning to help roll out mats, set up tables and chairs, and whatever else needs to be done prior to the tournament. Also, we will need as many people as possible to tear down everything and clean around the bleachers, etc. The more help we have the sooner we get out of there.
